Tournament directors, at their discretion, can implement the new rules earlier. These changes are the result of international collaboration aimed at aligning the worldwide backgammon community on a standardized ruleset.

Standardized Rules Worldwide

The new USBGF ruleset has been developed in collaboration with the World Backgammon Federation (WBGF) and independent tournament directors. The objective was to facilitate consistent play, fair competition, and the enjoyment of the game by setting clear expectations and reducing disputes. With these new Rules, tournament backgammon will finally work exactly the same across the globe. While the USBGF Rules text differs from the text used in other countries or in other languages, all rulesets now have identical meaning and interpretation.
