Joe Urso: How I went from Novice to Championship – Women of Backgammon
Joe will chart his journey on how he became the strong player he is today and share tips and study strategies that you can apply to your own game.
Joe Urso is from New York and has been playing backgammon for the past 5 years after rediscovering the game he played with his father at an early age. He is honored and humbled to be ask to speak with you all today.
Since the return to live play from COVID in the fall of 2021, Joe began playing in live events across the country and established himself as a Master 1 on the BMAB rating system. Over that time, in live events, Joe has cashed in the Sunny Florida 2021 Masters Jackpot, placed 2nd in the 2022 New York ABT Open Consolation, won the 2022 and the 2023 Atlanta Spring Classic ABT Consolation in back to back years, won the Sunny Florida 2022 Super Jackpot, and won the Sunny Florida 2022 BMAB tournament.
To improve his game, he has read over 15 backgammon books over the last 5 years and studies and plays daily, which he will discuss today. In addition, Joe also does weekly lessons with Grandmaster Steve Sax, going in depth on certain positions to improve his tactics. He is happy to chat with any of you about his journey in the backgammon community or discuss ways to improve your game.
