Albert Steg: Jazz-Age Backgammon – Women of Backgammon

The years 1928-31 were an extraordinary time for backgammon, and women were a big part of it. As authors, instructors, and hostesses, women helped propel the game to delirious levels of popularity by recognizing not just the fascination of the game itself, but its social possibilities. As we near the 100th anniversary of the chouette, it’s a good time to see what we can learn from backgammon’s first American boom time.

About Albert

Albert Steg is organizer of the New England Backgammon Club and was his Club Champion in 2015 and finalist in 2017. He learned the game as a teenager in the 1970s and has played competitively in local circles ever since. but emerged onto the broader ABT tournament scene over the past 8 years. He earned the BMAB Masters (M1) Rating in 2022 and is working toward a grandmaster rating. Albert has three published articles on early game (3rd-roll) tactics in PrimeTime Backgammon magazine, and he maintains the NEBC website, which features sections devoted to backgammon history and equipment. He is available for online instruction and in-person lessons in the Boston area.
