Start a Backgammon Club

Start a trend and connect with local backgammon enthusiasts.

If a backgammon club does not exist in your city already, you are welcome to create one. 

The USBGF will support interested club captains in their journey to find members and promote the game locally. 

Step 1: Choose a location. 
First things first, we need a place to play! Here are a few options to explore:
  • Local Coffee Shops/Breweries: Many have large tables and a relaxed atmosphere perfect for games. It’s also a great way to attract new members.
  • Community Centers: These often have affordable (or even free) spaces and can be a central meeting point.
  • Libraries: Some libraries have meeting rooms available for public use.
  • PizzeriasMany pizzeria chains often have plenty of tables or a meeting space for parties that is free to customers. 
Beyond the space, we’ll need a few backgammon boards. Many players bring their own, but it’s never a bad idea to have a spare or two. You should encourage everyone to bring theirs.
 
Step 2: Choosing a Time/Date
Consistency is key for a new club. I suggest you pick one regular day and time to start. To get a feel for what works best for everyone, send an email communication the available members in your area. 
  • Day of the week: Weekday evening (e.g., Tuesday, Thursday) or a weekend afternoon (e.g., Saturday, Sunday). There is no right answer, clubs play all over the calendar. 
  • Time: Early afternoon (12) and Early evening (4-6 PM) typically work best, but again, do what’s right for your audience. 
Step 3: Share your details with our Marketing Team!
Once you have your club name, location, and schedule, share your details with us at hello@usbgf.org and with our Marketing Director, Stu@usbgf.org
We will add your club listing to our website and help promote your first event to players in your community!
 
Step 4: Spreading the word
Once we have a tentative location and time, we can really start to spread the word! 
 
Here are some ideas:
  • Email Newsletter: USBGF will export a list of members in your community to share and send a direct invite to. 
  • Create a Facebook Page: Something simple like “<YOUR HOMETOWN> Backgammon Club” is what we typically see in our communities, but you can get creative as you want and include some local inspiration. 
  • Create a short video invite: Have someone hold your smartphone and shoot a vertical video of you playing backgammon at a table. Make it simple with an invite to come play at your new location. Be sure to share the time and date clearly. Ideally keep it under 60 seconds. 
  • Local Social Media Groups: Post in your hometown community groups on Facebook or Nextdoor.
  • Flyers: Put up simple flyers at coffee shops, community boards, and laundromats.
  • Word of Mouth: Tell your friends, family, and colleagues who might be interested.
Step 5: Prepare for your first Meet-Up
Your first gathering will be all about getting to know each other and, of course, playing some backgammon! Keep it casual and apply a simple round robin methodology. 
  • Casual Games: Just jump in and play 3 or 5 point matches.
  • Skill Levels Welcome: No pressure, whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro. 
  • Future Planning: Once you have a few players, feel free to discuss what everyone hopes to get out of the club – casual play, learning strategies, friendly tournaments, etc.
