National Team Criteria

National Team Criteria

Dear USBGF Members,

We are excited to share some important updates regarding the selection criteria for the U.S. National Backgammon Team, which represents the USBGF in the annual in-person team competition. A dedicated committee was formed to develop a process that is fair, transparent, and competitive, ensuring that the best of American backgammon is represented on the world stage.

This selection system will be applied for the 2026 team and for future U.S. national team competitions, providing a consistent and reliable framework moving forward.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident
  • Must be a current USBGF member

Selection Criteria for the upcoming World Team Championship in London, UK, August 24-26, 2026:

  1. Tournament Participation
Compete in at least two ABT tournaments in two different cities between April 9, 2025 (Cherry Blossom Tournament 2025), and April 19, 2026 (Cherry Blossom Tournament 2026).
  2. BMAB Experience Points (xp)
Earn a minimum 100xp points during the qualifying period from at least two ABT tournaments in different cities.
    • Application requirement: Players in the Players Cup BMAB will have points tracked automatically. If you are not participating in the Players Cup or UBC USA, you must submit an individual BMAB application to ensure your results are recognized. Qualifying events for an individual application for US Team participation are the ABT Open Division, Masters and Super jackpot events at USBGF tournaments.
  3. Performance Rating
Rankings are based on each player’s lowest PR average achieved over any 100 consecutive experience points during the qualifying period.
  4. Team Selection
The top five ranked players at the end of the qualifying period will receive automatic invitations. Up to two Captain’s Picks will also be awarded, if deemed necessary.
    • If a top five player cannot commit, invitations will extend to players ranked 6, 7, 8, etc., provided their BMAB ranking is Master 2 title or better.
    • Additional Captain’s Picks may be made if necessary.

Tracking Progress
To ensure transparency, a dedicated database will be made available for players to track their qualifying tournaments, BMAB xp points, and performance ratings throughout the season timeline.

  • To be considered for this event and included in the dedicated database, we request you submit a notice of intent in the form below on or before January 1, 2026.
  • The qualifying period closes with the Cherry Blossom Tournament 2026 (April 19, 2026).
  • Players selected to the team will be notified following this event, giving them ample time to prepare for international competition.

We look forward to seeing our community compete for these spots and to fielding a team that reflects the strength, talent, and spirit of U.S. backgammon.
