An exciting new ABT tournament — the Cherry Blossom Backgammon Championship — will be held April 6-9, 2017 at the Marriott Dulles Airport in the Washington DC metropolitan area at the special rate of $109 plus taxes. We do hope you will mark your calendar now and make plans to attend. It will be professionally directed by Bill Riles, co-director of the Texas Backgammon Championships and President/Executive Director of the U.S. Backgammon Federation, assisted by experienced national tournament directors Barry Silliman, Robin and Jeb Horton, and Jason Lee.
Washington DC is a great tourist destination, and we are delighted to have obtained exclusive passes for 20 people to visit The National Museum of African American History & Culture on Friday April 7 at 3 pm. These tickets are unavailable to the general public, and will be made available to players and their guests on a first-come, first-serve basis so let us know right away if you want to attend. Our hospitality desk at the tournament, staffed by Larry Brown will also be available throughout the tournament to make arrangements for you and your guests to visit some of the many other Washington museums and monuments.
There’s a jam-packed tournament schedule to fit the interests of every player. On Thursday April 6, there’s a BMAB qualifying event for grandmaster/master designated status directed by Jeb Horton (limited to the first 20 registrants). The Cherry Blossom Jackpot ($3000 entry fee in honor of the 3000 cherry trees donated to Washington DC by the mayor of Tokyo) starts at Noon on Thursday — limited to 16 registrants which are almost filled, so reserve now. George Washington Masters Jackpot ($500 entry) and Abraham Lincoln Limited Jackpot ($250) have two start times — one Thursday evening and one Friday afternoon. The fun continues with the Hall of States/Embassy Row team event (3 players from same state or non-US country) on Friday evening. The Main Championship and Advanced Divisions get underway Saturday morning with the Novice division starting Saturday afternoon to enable Novice players and guests to attend the Cherry Blossom Festival Parade Saturday morning. Senior Senators vs. Young Politicos event and USBGF Blitzes will start on Thursday with continuous entries. A Newcomer’s Freeroll on Saturday evening for first-time ABT players, and a Tavla Persian-style backgammon event and Jackpots on Sunday provide more opportunities to take home prize money for those out of the Main events.
You won’t want to miss the $1000 added money and the P-40 backgammon board provided by our P-40 sponsor awarded to the Championship winner, plus much more. So come and bring the family for a great visit to the Nation’s Capital. The special room rate ($109 plus taxes) is available 3 days before and 3 days after the tournament. So register now to secure your hotel room at the Marriott Dulles Airport. Print and submit the tournament registration form with a deposit to let us know you are coming and reserve space in limited registration events.
