Comments from event director Rich Munitz:

The NYC Backgammon tournament last night was a tremendous success that exceeded my wildest expectations. We had 44 entries, with about half of them being USBGF members! It was insane and something of a miracle that I pulled it off roughly on schedule. We were short tables and boards and I only had a 32-draw bracket, never in a million years expecting to have more players starting in the round of 64 than 32.

I think we got 6 new members as a result of this promotion. Probably most of them joined at the Novice/Youth level, but regardless, still a great result.

Our club winner was Lynn Ehrlich and finalist was Rich Schulz – both USBGF members. They wound up splitti

NYCBG Tournament Jan 9 Meetup with added money

Happy Holidays!

I will be running a tournament at our next Meetup at Josie Woods on Tuesday, January 9 instead of the monthly lesson. Registration will start at 6:30 and the tournament will begin at 7 PM. There will be a $10 entry fee with 100% returned as prizes. The format will be single elimination, with the match lengths being 3-5 points, to be determined based on size and time. The goal will be to finish the finals by 11:00.
The USBGF Tournament Rules will be in effect for this tournament: http://usbgf.org/docs/rules.pdf

In addition, the US Backgammon Federation will be adding $135 as a tournament side-pool that will be won by the USBGF member(s) who go the farthest in this tournament. That lucky player will also be entered in an online national play-off against the winners from other clubs. If you want a chance to win that side pool, and you are not already a USBGF member, you will need to join before the tournament starts. Be sure to select NYC Backgammon as your club when joining. The added money pot will grow if we have more members on the day of the tournament. Many players in our meetup will qualify for the USBGF Novice/Youth membership if you have either never played in a major tournament, or play at the Novice level and have been doing so for less than 3 years. Also if you are 25 or younger. If you so qualify, you can join for only $15 for a year. There are lots of benefits to membership if you’d like to learn, play free online tournaments, get discounts, etc. I believe strongly in the USBGF and what it does for our game and currently serve on its Board of Directors. Benefits and added money aside, I hope you will support this good cause by becoming a member.

Atlanta Northside Backgammon Club Championship (Added Money) Jan 13, 2018

This is part of the USBGF Prime Local Club Added Money Initiative, where a USBGF Prime club Local Event is provided added money for a USBGF member side pool.

The Top 16 players participate in a seeded, single elimination tournament. The winner receives a trophy that is identical to that for Player of the Year. We do not charge an entry fee in the Club Championship. The free entry is a small reward for supporting the club throughout the year. However, there is a side pool of $400 that everyone gets in ($25 x 16 = $400) and is split 2/3 1/3). This year we plan to create an additional prize pool of $160 (free $10 per player) also to be split 2/3 1/3.
